Charges have been laid after an officer-involved shooting near Canwood last week.

The non-fatal incident happened on May 28, and began when officers located a dark-coloured SUV that was being sought by RCMP in Ahtahkakoop, Prince Albert, Meadow Lake, Big River and Spiritwood.

The vehicle began to flee when officers attempted a traffic stop, and a spike strip was used to try and stop the suspects. Eventually, the SUV drove off the road and into a field about 10 kilometres east of Canwood and crashed into a washout before coming to a stop.

As police approached the vehicle, the man who was driving got out holding a gun, and a confrontation ensued that ended when one of the officers shot the man in the arm.

A search warrant was executed on the SUV, and officers seized a second firearm, cocaine, drug trafficking paraphernalia, and a conducted energy weapon. They also discovered that the license plate of the SUV had been reported as stolen from Alberta.

As a result, 30-year-old Jasmine Head and 32-year-old Harold Cardinal each face nine charges that include possession for the purpose of trafficking, careless use of a firearm, and possession of a prohibited weapon.

RCMP say Cardinal was driving the SUV and faces 10 additional counts, which include flight from a peace officer, assault on a peace officer with a weapon, and operation of a conveyance causing bodily harm.

Both were slated to have their first court date on Wednesday at Prince Albert Provincial Court.
