Melfort PBR a big success, could become annual event

For the first time ever, the City of Melfort hosted a PBR event, which took place this past weekend.

The Ripley Rumble was brought to town courtesy of Ripley Ford, and according to owner Mark Ripley, it went even better than expected.

“I think the words would be just incredible. It was sold out, the community support was absolutely amazing, and the feedback from people was over the top. We had an expectation, but I think it exceeded all expectations. At the end of the day, close to 1,000 people in the community came together, so to see that and raise a ton of money as well was just great,” he said.

“I thought a PBR event would be cool in this area because there hadn’t been one, and it’s a country town. It cost north of $120 thousand to bring it in, so there was some risk involved, but the community got behind it, we were able to combine it with our grand opening, and we probably raised at least an additional $50 thousand.”

The charity event will spread the proceeds around to the Melfort Fire Department, North Central Health Care Foundation, Youth Matters, Melfort Mustangs, and the Beatty 4-H Beef Club.

Ripley plans to announce the exact numbers donated to each organization sometime next week.

Overall, Saturday (May 31) went well for all, as it is very likely that this was just the first of many future PBR events in Melfort.

“We’ll definitely be doing this again, 100 per cent, we’ve tentatively booked dates for next year, we’re just firming that up, but we have confirmed there will be a Ripley Rumble 2… our plan is to do it annually, we’ll probably try to spread it out to different organizations every year, which we donate to, but it’ll certainly be a charity event every year. It’s our way to thank Melfort for everything they do every day, and it’s an opportunity for us to give some money back to some well-deserving organizations,” Ripley added.

“The riders were happy too, some of the feedback from them was that this was one of the better outdoor events they’ve been a part of. There were some really good rides, and it was part of their tour, so they earned points and money.”

Coy Robbins won the event with an aggregate score of 169, earning 57.5 event points with the victory.
