City mulling four-way stop at Reynolds School corner

The City of Melfort is looking at potentially putting up a four-way stop near a local elementary school.

Director of Public Works Kalyna Cipywnyk told northeastNOW the discussions started while the City was engaging with stakeholders for the upcoming road improvement project on McKendry Ave. E. and Alberta St, along with the sidewalk extension project on Hatton Ave. E. in the school zone.

“The administrators of both Reynolds Central School and MUCC expressed concerns about the increased level of pedestrian traffic and potential conflicts between pedestrians and vehicles,” Cipywnyk explained. “The administrators asked if the City could investigate solutions to improve safety at the intersection of Hatton Avenue East and Alberta Street as part of the upcoming projects.”

The feedback from Reynolds, MUCC, and the North East School Division (NESD) outlined the high pedestrian activity levels and vehicle congestion, especially during student pickup and drop-off with school bus operations adding to the traffic. Cipywnyk said their consulting engineers reviewed the conditions at the intersection and provided a letter of support recommending the installation of a four-way stop.

“Their assessment confirms that this measure would enhance the overall safety of the intersection by improving traffic control and vehicle movements and supporting a safer environment for students and other pedestrians while crossing the street.”

City Administration presented the recommendation to Council with supporting documents from the consulting engineers, and letters of support from the schools and NESD.

Council has asked Administration to provide more details about the proposed changes and the overall impact to traffic flow in the area before making a decision. A follow-up report with the information will be presented to Council by the end of June.
