The new arena within the Meadow Lake Co-op Centre will officially be known as the ‘Moeller Hometown Arena.’

The name is in recognition of a milestone $1,000,000 gift from Larry and Brenda Moeller towards the Co-op Community Builder Campaign.

For the Moeller’s, the gift was more than just a generous donation, it was a heartfelt tribute to the community that shaped their lives.

“This community was good to us,” said Larry. “We wanted to acknowledge our gratitude and do something meaningful for future generations.”

Despite now living outside Meadow Lake, their connection to it remains strong. They attended school, got married, and started their first business – PineRidge Ford in 1993 – in the community and much of their extended family remains in the area the Moeller’s still call ‘home.’

“We had an excellent education in Meadow Lake, a strong foundation for future accomplishments,” Brenda said. “We made lifelong friends here, many of whom we met during our time at Carpenter High School. These are the relationships and memories that stay with you.”

Their contribution has helped push the fundraising campaign well past its original $6 million goal, with the current support now approaching $6.9 million.

For a community with a population of just over 5,000 people, Tom Gorsalitz of DCG Philanthropic Services said it’s an extraordinary accomplishment for Meadow Lake.

“Going into a community of that size with the $6 million goal for the fundraising campaign was ambitious to start with, but everyone in the community felt that this project was very important, and with the arena that burned down a few years ago, they were missing that. So, everyone really saw that there was going to be strong support for this project. I think it is really, really, special for the community of Meadow Lake,” he said.

The future of the Moeller Hometown Arena is envisioned as a vibrant, year-round hub for sports, recreation, and community gatherings. Hockey, figure skating, and other events will find a new home in the state-of-the-art facility, which is designed to reflect the pride, togetherness, and spirit of Meadow Lake.

“We recognize that an arena and multi-use centre are an integral part of smaller communities,” said Larry.

“We hope the facility creates a sense of pride for the people who made this significant project happen,” added Brenda. “And we hope that everyone who enters its doors feels that it enriches their lives.”

Mayor Merlin Seymour also expressed his appreciation. In a press release, he wrote “Larry and Brenda’s leadership is deeply inspiring. Their gift shows what’s possible when people carry their hometown in their hearts. It will leave a lasting mark on Meadow Lake and encourage others to support in ways that are meaningful to them.”

The official ribbon-cutting to open the new Co-op Centre is set to be announced sometime this month.
