Requests for donations issued to help wildfire evacuees

Community agencies around the Battlefords are calling on the community to help wildfire evacuees.

According to a press release issued by the City of North Battleford, the city, along with Battlefords Agency Tribal Chiefs and the Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency, is issuing the request for donations.

The Northland Power Curling Centre, located at 2-623 Carlton Trail, is accepting all types of supplies including toothbrushes and toothpaste all sizes of diapers, baby wipes and pull-ups, formula, baby food, clean clothing for all sizes, ages, personal hygiene products, toiletries and non-perishable snack food.

Donors may drop off supplies may do so at the bay doors located at the back of the arena, and anyone wishing to donate money may do so through the Canadian Red Cross. Each dollar raised will be matched by the federal government

Meanwhile, the release said that those who have connected with the Red Cross are asked to call 1-800-863- 6582 while evacuees connected with the Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency are to call 1-855-559-5502.

The Battlefords Healthcare Foundation (BHC Foundation) is another of the local organizations putting out the call and has launched a short-term emergency relief initiative: “Healing Together: Community Care for Wildfire-Affected Families.”

According to a news release, the foundation will run the initiative for two weeks and is asking people to donate similar items to the city while also including things to go into Comfort and Trauma Kits.

“While emergency response is not part of our traditional scope, this crisis calls for compassion, collaboration, and rapid support,” said Leanne Ducommun, Executive Director of the BHC Foundation, in the release.

“We’re inviting our community to come together in the spirit of healing to provide comfort and care to those navigating uncertainty and trauma.”

Items for the kits will include toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap, shampoo, deodorant, socks and for comfort, the BHC is also looking for donations of soft blankets, stuffed animals, tea, bath salts, essential oils, and stress balls. Journals, notebooks, colouring books, pens, crayons, fidget toys and water bottles are also welcome to address mental health.

For those who wish to donate funds, the foundation is asking for a minimum of $25 to go towards helping the team to build and distribute the kits in partnership with Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA), BRTHC6, and the SPSA. The “Healing Together” campaign will run for two weeks.

Donations can be dropped off at the BHC Foundation Office in the main office of Battlefords Union Hospital from Monday–Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
