Melfort Minor Softball Association was quite successful over the weekend as three of their teams grabbed top-two finishes in their respective local tournaments.

The U11 team walked away with a silver medal after losing to the Saskatoon Raiders in the A final. They did, however, have to defeat the previously unbeaten Regina Saints in the semi-finals to even earn a shot at gold.

The U13 B team also captured a silver medal, doing so at their home tournament on Sunday. It was a close A final game against the PA Aces, as the Spirit lost by just one.

And finally, the U13 A group had to pull off a multi-run comeback in their gold medal game in Prince Albert against the home team Aces. A walk-off in the bottom of the seventh gave them the championship at the Shaye Amundson Memorial Tournament.

“The whole game was back and forth, they took a lead, and then we would take it back. We had some really key hits from some key players on our team, and even the bottom of the lineup came through and got on base. It was a really good team effort, the girls stayed positive, and it really showed,” explained U13 A coach Kevin Stoneman.

“Obviously, it was pretty nice to beat the home team, and the girls kept their hopes up even when they headed into our last at-bats down by a couple. I didn’t know if we were gonna pull it off, it was a nail biter and a lot of chaotic fun… the girls went bananas when we won, the walk off was done in great style and fashion, and even watching the replay on video I saw myself skipping like a little school girl, the emotions were quite high. They believed, and we came through with the win.”

Going into the bottom of the seventh, Melfort trailed P.A. 7-5, but eventually won 8-7. One of their players hit a home run to tie the game before a base hit up the middle brought the winning run to the plate.

This was the second tournament this specific Spirit team has won, as they also captured gold in an indoor tournament in Martensville.

Next up for the Melfort team will be their own home tournament, as they host their annual 222’s event.
