Time to tune in and show you care.

As wildfires continue to displace families and threaten communities across Saskatchewan, broadcasters from across the province are coming together for a united day of action — a province-wide Radiothon in support of the Canadian Red Cross and wildfire evacuees, happening Thursday, June 12.

The Saskatchewan Day of Caring will include Pattison Media Saskatchewan radio stations – 1050 CJNB, Q98, 93.3 BEACH Radio in North Battleford, 102.3 CJNS in Meadow Lake; 900 CKBI, Power 99, 101.5 BEACH Radio in Prince Albert; and CJVR FM and 750 BEACH Radio in Melfort.

The province-wide endevour will also include the Pattison Media news portals battlefordsNOW.com, meadowlakeNOW.com, paNOW.com, northeastNOW.com, lrongeNOW.com, and saskNOW.com.

As the donations roll in, the Government of Canada will match, dollar-for-dollar, the province-wide efforts.

“We are seeing, reading and hearing about the devastation these wildfires are causing every day as our news reporters across northern Saskatchewan cover what’s become an unprecedented early wildfire season,” said Pattison Media Saskatchewan General Manager Karl Johnston.

“What’s become apparent is how the people in the province have come together to welcome those displaced by wildfires. They’re looking for ways to help and this is a great opportunity for us to join in raising some much-needed support and money for supplies that the Canadian Red Cross is already providing to thousands of evacuees.”

To date, there have been 247 fires in Saskatchewan, marking a nearly 42 per cent increase over last year.

According to the Canadian Red Cross, they have officially registered more than 8,000 people from over 2,800 households and have opened shelters located in Saskatoon, Regina, and Prince Albert.

They have also provided food, supplies and accommodation throughout the province and have mobile outreach services in Lloydminster, Saskatoon, Prince Albert, Regina, North Battleford, and Unity.

During the radiothon, more than 50 radio stations will participate to help up to 15,000 displaced people.

During the day, stories will be shared and listeners can donate to the Red Cross online, text the word RADIO to 20222 to donate $10 and share via social media by tagging #SKDayOfCaring.

“Donations to the Canadian Red Cross will be used to assist those impacted by the wildfires in Saskatchewan with immediate and ongoing relief, including financial assistance, support to evacuees and the communities hosting them, recovery and resilience efforts in response to the wildfires, as well as supporting community preparedness and risk reduction for future all-hazard disaster events within Saskatchewan,” the Red Cross said in a statement.

“Your compassion will help provide vital humanitarian assistance to people in Saskatchewan who have been impacted by this emergency.”

According to the Red Cross website so far, they have raised $283,000 though they note it doesn’t include the government-matched dollars, for the Wildfire Appeal.
