Progress continues for Lanigan daycare expansion project

The Town of Lanigan’s Daycare Expansion project has cleared another hurdle.

The Town has announced the daycare will proceed as planned, with Miners Construction Co. chosen as the successful bidder.

Katelynn Psovsky of Lanigan Daycare Cooperative said the board is “thrilled to be making so much progress with this project,” and that they feel that the build is in great hands with the chosen contractor.

Lanigan Town Council announced back in January they had approved an agreement in principle with the Lanigan Cooperative Daycare (LCD) to build the new daycare. A formal lease agreement was struck between the Town and the LCD, with a design/build project collaboratively developed. Eight proposals were received for the design/build project.

“It’s been a pleasure working with Lanigan Cooperative Daycare and the Town of Lanigan on this important community project,” said Project Coordinator Barry Morishita. “The selection process was thorough and collaborative, and I look forward to working with Miners Construction to deliver the new daycare on time and on budget.”

Mayor Tony Mycock said Council is pleased a key part of their strategic priorities is moving forward.

“This is a key piece of the puzzle for Lanigan, not only supporting our existing residents and businesses by having more daycare spots in town, but it also supports our initiatives for growth and I am very excited to see shovels in the ground in the very near future.”

The overall budget for the project is $2.9 million, with $2 million coming from a loan from the Local Government Committee of the Saskatchewan Municipal Board. A $623,000 provincial grant has already been received for the project, while the sale of the existing building is expected to net about $250,000. The balance of the cost will be covered through fundraising.

The Town will lead a major fundraising project that will include corporate sponsorship of Lanigan facilities, including the daycare, while smaller-scale fundraising that benefits the daycare will be spearheaded by the daycare itself.

The project will be located at the former swimming pool and tennis court site. It is expected to be complete by next February, with a playground and landscaping to follow in the spring, and licensed occupancy by June 2026.
