Salvation Army receives $10k from 100 Women Who Care Melfort

The 100 Women Who Care chapter in Melfort has once again awarded a local non-profit organization with $10,000.

The chapter held their quarterly meeting at the Melfort Golf and Country Club this week, and spokesperson Richelle Rogers told northeastNOW the turnout was solid despite how busy people are this time of year.

The evening began with supper and moved on to the program.

“We had the three presentations, which were all very, very good,” said Rogers.

The organizations presenting at the meeting included CATSask, a non-profit that helps abandoned cats in rural communities, the Salvation Army, and the Melfort Multi-K, who Rogers said stepped in at the last minute to replace another organization that had to bow out. Rogers said the Multi-K had just a few days to prepare their presentation and did an excellent job despite the time constraints.

In the end, the Salvation Army was chosen to receive the $10,000.

“I think everyone learned something from all of [the presentations] but I don’t know that many people knew exactly all of what the Salvation Army did year-round,” explained Rogers.

She said many people know of the Salvation Army through their Christmas Kettle campaign, their Christmas Hamper program, and the Salvation Army store. However, Rogers said they do much more, including Backpacks for Kids, weekly lunches, and their big Christmas lunch, just to name a few.

The 100 Women Who Care each provide $100 per quarterly meeting to give to a worthy non-profit in the region. Those non-profits explain what they do in the community and what the money would be used for should they win. However, it’s not just about money.

“Every organization that has won has been very appreciative of it,” Rogers said. “The ones even that haven’t won gain a lot of exposure and traction within the community because all of them are looking for other funds or volunteers.”

The 100 Women Who Care Melfort do have spaces open on their waitlist should any local women want to join. Rogers said there are occasionally people that can no longer participate or who move away, and it’s important to have women on that wait list.
