Battle West takes home haul of medals from provincials

The Saskatchewan High Schools Athletic Association (SHSAA) held the Track and Field Provincial Championships this past weekend in Moose Jaw and the Battle West District put on an impressive display, racking up a big haul of medals across all age categories.

Headlining the team’s performance was Matthew Heidel (North Battleford Comp.), who emerged as a powerhouse in the Intermediate Boys division. Heidel claimed two gold medals, winning the 400 m and 800 m, also took silver in the 1500 m, and added a bronze in the 3000 m to cap off an extraordinary weekend. His efforts also earned him the title as Intermediate Boys Aggregate Winner for most points for his age group in the province.

Joining Heidel at the top of the podium was Lily Holman (Luseland), who showcased her endurance and speed by winning gold in both the Intermediate Girls 800 m and 1500 m. She also earned a silver in the 3000 m.

Dmitrius Metrunec (Leoville) delivered a strong performance in the Intermediate Boys Discus, taking gold, while Payton Russell (John Paul II) unleashed a winning throw in the Senior Girls Javelin to earn top honours as well.

Casey Lewin (Unity) took top of the podium for Junior Girls Discus and Kiera Van Nortwick (North Battleford Comp.) was the best in Senior Girls Long Jump to bring home the gold.

Silver medals went to:

  • Camryn Humenny (John Paul II) – Junior Girls Shot Put
  • Mya Kostiuk (Unity) – Intermediate Girls High Jump
  • Kiera Van Nortwick (North Battleford Comp.) – Senior Girls 80m Hurdles
  • Pablo Bedard (Medstead) – Senior Boys Discus

Bronze finishes were earned by:

  • Casey Lewin (Unity) – Junior Girls 100m
  • Kayden Fenrich (Wilkie) – Junior Boys Javelin
  • Kendra Meier (John Paul II) – Junior Girls Pole Vault

Beyond the podium, Battle West athletes continued to impress with strong top eight finishes in multiple events. Some of the other notable finishes were:

  • Bailey Hampson (Cut Knife) – 7th in Senior Girls Discus
  • Lian Taylor (Luseland) – 8th in Intermediate Boys Javelin
  • Emeri Simonar (Spiritwood) – 6th in Senior Girls 1500m
  • Carter Prystupa (Hafford) – 8th in Junior Boys Javelin
  • Elan Kramer (North Battleford Comp.) – 8th in Intermediate Girls 400m
  • Josh Masse (Medstead) – 8th in Junior Boys Shot
  • Mia Blais (John Paul II) – 5th Intermediate Girls Hurdles
  • Kendra Meier (John Paul II) – 7th in Junior Girls Hurdles
  • Sophie Pyle (John Paul II) – 5th in Senior Girls Tetrathlon
