Battle West takes home haul of medals from provincials
The Saskatchewan High Schools Athletic Association (SHSAA) held the Track and Field Provincial Championships this past weekend in Moose Jaw and the Battle West District put on an impressive display, racking up a big haul of medals across all age categories.
Headlining the team’s performance was Matthew Heidel (North Battleford Comp.), who emerged as a powerhouse in the Intermediate Boys division. Heidel claimed two gold medals, winning the 400 m and 800 m, also took silver in the 1500 m, and added a bronze in the 3000 m to cap off an extraordinary weekend. His efforts also earned him the title as Intermediate Boys Aggregate Winner for most points for his age group in the province.
Joining Heidel at the top of the podium was Lily Holman (Luseland), who showcased her endurance and speed by winning gold in both the Intermediate Girls 800 m and 1500 m. She also earned a silver in the 3000 m.
Dmitrius Metrunec (Leoville) delivered a strong performance in the Intermediate Boys Discus, taking gold, while Payton Russell (John Paul II) unleashed a winning throw in the Senior Girls Javelin to earn top honours as well.
