Kim Walker claims Ladies Northern title

One of the largest women-only golf tournaments in the province has wrapped up, and this year’s champion of the 2025 Ladies Northern at Cooke Municipal Golf Club in Prince Albert is a familiar one.

After winning the championship last year in the seniors category, Regina’s Kim Walker came away as the champion of the entire tournament with a score of 11 over par through two days.

In the senior’s category, Kathy Ziglo from Saskatoon took the win with a score of 16 over par. The tournament hosted 64 golfers over the two day tournament.

Golfers had to battle through rain and wind on day one, and shifting winds and cold temperatures throughout the day on day two.

“Obviously the rain and the wind combined with the freezing cold temperature was a little bit crazy, but the greens were soft and they were holding, which made a good difference today,” said Walker. “I think it was windier, but I couldn’t really tell which direction the wind was coming. So there were a few errant shots. I get very turned around at this course, I lose my sense of direction very easily at this course, but was able to hold it together. I had a great really fun day with both Lauren [Fox] and Kim [Brown] today. We battled it right down to the very end.”

As Walker mentioned, day two saw her play in the championship flight with Creighton’s Lauren Fox and Saskatoon’s Kim Brown, both finishing two strokes behind Walker at +13. The three golfers battled throughout the tournament all the way until the final hole, but there was one hole on day one that really made the difference.

“The first day Kim and I, there was one hole, I think, where there was a five-shot swing on one hole. So you never know what’s going to happen. You have to just hang in there, you have to roll with bad holes, be very patient and just try to pull through.”

Walker finished second overall in last year’s Ladies Northern, but didn’t play much golf after that because of an injury. As a result, Walker was still feeling the effects of her injury a little bit leading up to the tournament to the point where she almost didn’t compete, but she credits a late golf lesson with one of her local pros to help get her back into competition form.

“I actually was struggling over the last little week, and I have to give some credit to, and this is for everybody, to make sure you reach out to your local professionals. Because I took an emergency lesson with Garrett McMillan on Thursday before I came up here for the tournament, and he tweaked things and was able to get me into a condition to be able to play really well today. So I encourage everybody to get out, to make sure that when they’re struggling with their game, that they get a little bit of help from the people that know what they’re doing.”

While Walker won the champions flight and Sue Skinner won flight one, Prince Albert local Lynn Braaten finished first in the second flight, Waskesiu’s Charene Kozak won the third, tournament organizer and Prince Albert local Andrea Ring won the fourth, Eileen McGill from Warman won the fifth, another Prince Albert local Marley Ring win the sixth, and finally Candace Caisse won the seventh.
