Local talent, community steps up for paramedics injured in Vegas accident

As two young paramedics from Prince Albert continue to recover from significant injuries, the community continues to rally around them.

A fundraising event this Thursday featuring local comedian Kelly Taylor and musicians Donny Parenteau and Aiden Edwards & East Side of 2nd has been sold out.

“We’re really pleased and thankful that the community stepped up and is behind us 100 per cent. We appreciate that very much,” said Lyle Karasiuk of Parkland Ambulance Paramedics.

On April 18, Katrine Sinclair and Charlie Lastowsky were celebrating Katrin’s 21st birthday in Las Vegas when a car struck them at a crosswalk. Both sustained severe injuries. Katrine ended up with a fractured pelvis in three places, a broken right humerus, vertebrae fractures and a tibia plateau fracture among other injuries. A GoFundMe page was set up for the girls, neither of whom had travel insurance. There was some hope that SGI insurance would cover some expenses, but Sinclair’s medical bills alone exceeded US$200,000.

“If anyone has ever travelled in the US and had the unfortunate experience of needing medical care, you know that the bills start mounting up fairly quickly,” Karasiuk said. “Both paramedics needed air medevac to get home and that in itself was a considerable expense for the families.”

Although the fundraiser this week is sold out, Karasiuk said many are still asking how they can help. He said recently a woman drove up to him and offered $100.

“She said it’s for those two girls and I just wanna do something to help. You know, it’s people in our community that have done that despite all the rest of the fundraising activities that go on in our community whether it’s for evacuees or your favourite charity or your kids hockey or ball. You know, people are incredibly generous and again, we just thank them for their outpouring of generosity and ultimately love.”

As for their recovery, Karasiuk said both Sinclair and Lastowsky are ‘doing fine.’ Although Sinclair did have some challenges with her recovery, both are home and receiving physiotherapy. He hopes to see them back on shift at Parkland Ambulance at some point this summer.
