Beavers bite down on Twins, take first in NSRBL with fifth straight win

The North Battleford Beavers continue their red-hot run in the North Saskatchewan River Baseball League (NSRBL) as they defeated the Lloydminster Twins 5–1 on Tuesday to notch their fifth straight win and claim the number one spot in the league with an 8–1 record.

It was a well-rounded effort from the Beavers, who jumped out to a 1–0 lead in the first inning and never looked back. They added two more in the middle innings before tacking on two more late, giving them a 5-0 cushion. However, the Twins were able to scratch a lone run in the final frame to avoid the shutout.

Pitching was again a standout for the Beavers as Caleb Hoiseth delivered five shutout innings, seven strikeouts and allowed no earned runs. Kyle Gregoire took the mound in relief for the final two innings, striking out three while giving up the Twins’ only run.

“Our pitching was good, and our defence stayed solid as well,” said Gregoire, who also serves as a coach.

“They had runners on a few different times where they could have done some damage, but thankfully we held tight,” he added.

At the plate, the Beavers spread the offence around. Gavin Nolin went 2-for-3 and drove in a pair of runs, while Bryce Gatzke added two singles and two RBIs of his own. Skyler Dimmick was a big contributor, recording two hits and crossing the plate three times. Andy Hudec also chipped in with a 2-for-3 performance and an RBI.

Despite the final score, Gregoire said the contest was tighter than it looked.

“I think it was a good test for us. The score was 5–1, but it was a lot closer than that. These close games definitely help us and let us know that we can’t take anybody lightly,” he said.

With the win, the Beavers now sit at the top of the NSRBL standings, and Gregoire said it’s due to the team’s collective effort.

“We’ve had different guys on our team stepping up big time; it’s not just been one or two guys every time. It’s been the odd bat we needed or a key defensive play, and that’s been really helpful,” Gregoire explained.

Now, with just five games left in the regular season, the two-time defending champions aren’t getting too far ahead of themselves as they still have some key matchups before the playoffs.

“We had a good game against Unity, so we know that they’re going to be a challenge. Standard Hill, we haven’t played them yet, so we still have two big games coming up,” Gregoire said.

“We’re a long way away from that (championship). We are just hopeful that we can continue this run as long as we can,” he added.

The Beavers look to extend their win streak to six games next week as they take on the fifth place Oil City Ducks on Monday, June 16, in Lloydminster at 6:30 p.m.
