In just three short years, Yassine Hussein has transformed from a curious newcomer to a dominant force in Saskatchewan judo and beyond—proving that age is but a number, and greatness knows no bounds.

At just 11 years old, Yassine is already competing in the U14 category, regularly going toe-totoe—and triumphing—against athletes older and more experienced than him. A proud representative of Team Saskatchewan and the Saskatoon Judo Club, Yassine’s journey during the 2024/2025 season has been nothing short of extraordinary.

His breakout moment came in October 2024 at the Manitoba Open, where he claimed gold, dazzling spectators with a blend of poise, precision, and raw competitive spirit. It was the beginning of an unbeaten season that would see Yassine dominate every tournament he entered.

But it was the Pacific International Championship in British Columbia that truly catapulted Yassine into the national spotlight. With over 800 competitors in attendance, the event is one of the most prestigious on the calendar. Undeterred by the high stakes, Yassine delivered a series of flawless matches, each ending in decisive ippon victories. His impeccable timing and composure under pressure earned him the gold and the respect of the judo world.

The victories didn’t stop there. In March 2025, Yassine stormed through the Alberta Provincial

Tournament, once again standing at the top of the podium. And at the Saskatchewan Provincial Championships, he completed a hat-trick of first-place finishes, winning all matches with his now-signature efficiency and style.

But beyond the medals and accolades, Yassine’s approach to judo is rooted in deep respect for the sport’s values. “Judo has taught me dedication, devotion, desire, and discipline,” he says—a mantra that guides both his training and his life.

Much of Yassine’s success is owed to his mentor and coach, Sensei Greg, whose guidance has helped shape him into not just a skilled athlete, but a humble and focused competitor. Together, they’ve built a foundation that’s already yielding international promise.

With Olympic dreams on the horizon and a fierce determination in his heart, Yassine Hussein is far from finished. He’s not just winning tournaments—he’s inspiring a generation, proving that with the right mix of heart, hustle, and humility, even the youngest of athletes can achieve extraordinary things.
