Perhaps an indication of an improving wildfire situation, for the first time in about three weeks the Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency did not hold a media briefing Thursday. However, they did still issue a bulletin detailing the wildfires of note.

There are currently 23 active wildfires in Saskatchewan; six of them are not contained.

The Shoe fire, that is 550,663 hectares in size, saw some increased fire behavior yesterday that warranted tanker action on the West flank, to the south of Torch River. Crews are continuing to mop up hotspots North of Whelan Bay and around Little Bear/Moosehorn with the help of heavy equipment and overnight drone scans. The Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency (SPSA) said direct attack with heavy equipment has been completed as far as possible in the north division. The Shoe Fire remains 9 km from Highway 120 along the NE edge of Candle Lake boundary.

People who were evacuated from Brabant because of the Jaysmith wildfire (166,328 ha), northeast of Missinipe are being allowed to return home today. The SPSA said the fire received rain Wednesday and called conditions ‘favourable with good visibility’.

The Pisew fire, west of La Ronge is sitting at 181,765 hectares in size. Heavy equipment continues to work near Napatak and direct attack continues west of the community of La Ronge. Crews are working hotspots and using helicopters with bucket support to extinguish fire lines. Only North Battleford and La Ronge structural departments remain assigned to the blaze, as others have been released.

Crews are working out spots radiating out from the community of Denare Beach, as well as along Hwy 196 and 167. Crews battling the 130,822 hectare Wolf fire are also working in the unsecured area to the north of Denare Beach. They’re taking inventory of values burnt from the Wolf and Club fires.

At the Pelican2 fire, northeast of Pelican Narrows, crews continue to extinguish hot spots on the south of the 40,580 hectare fire near Jan Lake where helipads have been created. Crews are demobilizing equipment where it is no longer required as lines secure.

The Ditch02 fire, north of Weyakwin has charred 174,000 hectares so far. Crews there are constructing lines and conducting ignition operations south of Ramsey Road to Montreal Lake.

The vast majority of the more than 30 communities that were previously evacuated have started to repatriate today.
