Health Minister Carr visits Melfort as Hospital receives funded upgrades

Jun 13, 2025 | 3:58 PM

Earlier this week, Rural and Remote Health Minister Lori Carr visited the City of Melfort as part of her Saskatchewan summer tour.

Carr toured two of the local healthcare facilities and met with healthcare professionals in the community, as the hospital continues to receive upgrades, funded by the provincial government.

Both the Melfort Hospital and Parkland Place recently received new chillers, while the sewer system at the hospital was also recently replaced.

Meanwhile, a project to upgrade the operating room airflow system is currently in procurement. In total, these investments were roughly $1.3 million over the past two budget years.

“It was a pleasure to meet with many of the medical staff in Melfort while touring their respective healthcare facilities, where I was able to get a real sense of their working environment,” Minister Carr said in a release. “Our visit was very positive, and I want to extend my sincere appreciation for their contribution and invaluable service to the health care system.”

Other upgrades include surgical capital funding in 2024-25 of just over $160,000 to purchase an advanced surgical microscope that will allow Melfort’s visiting specialists to perform more ear, nose and throat (ENT) procedures.

Additionally, the Saskatchewan Health Authority has entered a five-year lease agreement for new endoscopy equipment, beginning in this year’s budget at a cost of $264,000 per year.

“I appreciate the minister coming out, I think it gives her a better perspective when she’s discussing with the SHA and all the partners that serve us. We like the fact that she’s had boots on the ground and discussed the issues with the local health leaders. I’m super appreciative that she was able to take a couple of days and come and spend that together looking at Melfort and the surrounding area,” added Melfort MLA Todd Goudy.

“Because of some of our specialists at the hospital and their team, we are able to service some of the bigger cities too, so it’s good to make sure that we’re properly equipped and funded with the right equipment.”
