Another Melfort Mustang has decided on where to continue their hockey career.

Graduated defenceman Zach Turner has committed to the University of Manitoba Bisons in USports.

“I’m super pumped, I’m excited to play close to where my family can come and watch, and I know quite a few guys that play there,” Turner told northeastNOW.

“I also get to take a degree that I want to take there, I’m going into agri-business while I’m there, because I plan to take over the family farm.”

Turner, a Boissevain, Man. native, played just one season in Melfort, previously coming from the Swift Current Broncos.

The 21-year-old played 115 games in the WHL prior to the stint with the Mustangs. As a member of the Blue and Green this past year, Turner had 38 points in 65 games, helping lead the club to their second-straight league title and CJHL silver medal.

“There couldn’t have been a better spot to end up than in Melfort for my final Junior A season, everyone welcomed me with open arms, and the success of the team was unbelievable. I was able to take my hockey skills to another level, and bringing home a championship was an amazing experience,” added Turner.

“I’m excited to play a few of those guys down the road now, there’s always gonna be that competitive edge there, being former teammates, so it’s gonna be some awesome matchups.”

The six-foot-two, 192-pound blueliner joins the likes of Reilley Kotai, Zac Somers and Nic Andrusiak, as Stangs players to commit to USports organizations in the last week.

“Zach’s experience was a huge asset in our dressing room”, concluded Mustangs’ Head Coach Trevor Blevins. “He came to Melfort to continue his development as a great defender and to play an offensive role. He played a huge part in our championship season”.
