Onion Lake man charged with manslaughter in 2024 death near Lloydminster

A man from Onion Lake Cree Nation has been charged with manslaughter in connection with the death of a 68-year-old man in rural Saskatchewan last year.

In a release issued Friday, RCMP say 19-year-old Trey Berland was arrested at the Edmonton Remand Centre and charged on May 26. He is scheduled to appear in Lloydminster Provincial Court on June 23.

The charge relates to an incident on April 3, 2024, in the RM of Britannia, near Lloydminster. Around 5 p.m., Maidstone RCMP responded to a report of an injured man at a house. The man was taken to hospital with serious injuries and later died.

Saskatchewan RCMP’s Major Crimes Unit led the investigation with assistance from the North Battleford Forensic Identification Services and the Saskatchewan Coroners Service.

The province’s Serious Incident Response Team (SIRT) is also investigating after learning that Maidstone RCMP had received a request to conduct a wellness check on the man earlier that day, around 7 a.m., but did not complete a physical check.

RCMP say a separate internal review has been launched to determine whether officers followed proper protocol, pointing out that they are “disclosing this as part of our ongoing commitment to transparency.”

SIRT has been made aware of Berland’s arrest and charge.
