Rabid bat discovered at Anglin Lake

Jun 13, 2025 | 11:49 AM

The District of Lakeland has confirmed a case of a rabid bat found near Anglin Lake.

The confirmation was made to the district’s social media on Friday the 13th and was the fourth confirmed case of rabies in Saskatchewan so far this year.

All of Saskatchewan’s rabies cases this year have been in bats, as have the cases in Alberta and British Columbia, which each have had one case.

Easterly, Manitoba, has had one rabid dog and two rabid skunks. Ontario has so far confirmed 12 rabid bats and five rabid red foxes.

Quebec is the Canadian hotspot with two rabid dogs and 28 cases of rabies found in racoons, along with two red foxes.

New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, PEI and Newfoundland and Labrador have not had any cases so far.

Of the three territories, only Nunavut has confirmed cases so far in 2025; two were in arctic foxes, one was in a dog, and one was in a caribou.

Getting vaccinated after a potential rabies exposure is crucial as the virus is always fatal, but can be prevented if the vaccine is administered before symptoms appear.

Last year, two cases of rabies were confirmed northeast of Prince Albert. Both were in bats and part of the 12 total cases found in Saskatchewan.
