Charity Race for Kids raises $10,000 for BGC Battlefords

The streets of North Battleford were filled with energy and excitement on Thursday evening as teams raced through the city for the annual Race for Kids, all in support of the Battlefords Boys and Girls Clubs (BGC).

The event brought together businesses from around town for lively, fast-paced challenges, all with a mission to support the community, bringing in over $10,000 to help fund youth programs.

Starting at the Blend Kitchen and Bar, teams of four raced to ten different checkpoints throughout the city. At each stop, participants faced off in Minute to Win It-style challenges, testing their knowledge, coordination, and teamwork. Once completed successfully, teams raced to the next location, all vying to cross the finish line first.

Beyond the friendly competition, the real purpose of the event was to raise funds to support programs offered by the BGC of the Battlefords.

“The hope is to support the programs and services that we offer at the club. With very few guaranteed dollars each and every year, operating at the capacity that we do is really difficult. Fundraisers like Race for Kids are vital to the sustainability of the programs we offer our community,” said BGC Executive Director Nicole Combres.

And the scope of those programs is massive.

“We operate in some capacity almost 290 days each and every year. There are some months where we offer a program or service every single day. In 2024, we had over 900 participants, served more than 34,000 snacks and meals, and ran a drop-in program six days a week throughout the school year, all completely free for kids aged 5 to 14,” Combres added.

With the rising costs of programming, staff, food, and facilities, the funds raised from events like Race for Kids make a significant difference.

As teams crossed the finish line, high-fived their teammates, and celebrated the evening, the real winner was clear: a stronger, supported future for kids in the Battlefords.
