A man behind the wheel of a vehicle that led police on a chase for more than 40 kilometers has received a four month jail sentence.

However with credit for pre-sentence custody, Christien Lewis will be released on Monday and then subject to 12 months probation and a one-year driving ban.

The case that dates back to Jan. 27, was discussed Monday morning at Prince Albert Provincial Court.

RCMP initially received a report of a gunshot at Big River First Nation. The follow-up investigation determined there was an altercation between a group of people who were travelling in vehicles. No injuries were reported to police.

Officers located a suspect vehicle on Highway 793 and after activating their emergency lights, attempted a traffic stop. The vehicle did not stop.

Officers pursued the vehicle, which continued into Highway 55. Officers then set up a tire deflation device north of Canwood. The vehicle ran over it and as a result one of the tires exploded. The vehicle then came to a stop in a ditch and all three occupants were arrested without incident.

There were no weapons found in the vehicle.

Lewis was additionally charged with breaching a conditional sentence order, which included a condition that he remain inside an approved residence 24 hours a day.

As part of their investigation, officers later located a second suspect vehicle abandoned in the community. One of the people in the car with Lewis, told police they had been fleeing the people that were in the second vehicle and were scared they were going to get shot.

Judge Rogers, who accepted the joint submission, noted the facts of the case were very concerning, not only from the standpoint of public safety but also the safety of the officers involved.

“It’s something that needs to be discouraged,” she said.
