The Prince Albert Royals in the Sask. Premier Baseball League had an eventful Father’s Day weekend at Andy Zwack Field.

The Royals played host to two Southern teams for a pair of weekend doubleheaders, facing off with the Lumsden Cubs on Saturday and the Regina Blue Jays on Sunday.

Despite being slated to play two games on Saturday, the Royals and Cubs only managed to get one in as rainy weather had other plans for that afternoon. But in the one game they did play, Lumsden rallied in the late innings to topple P.A., 13-5.

It wasn’t all Cubs though, as the Royals got the party started with a run in the first. Lumsden quickly answered back in the top of the second, rallying for three runs of their own to take a two-run lead. Just like the Cubs, P.A. also scored three in the bottom half of the inning. Carter Martin hit a sacrifice fly, before Ty Semenchuk lined a two-run double to help the Royals regain the lead.

That’s when the bats came to life for the Cubs. Lumsden managed another three-run inning in the third and tacked on another in the fourth, before exploding for five in the fifth in a massive two-out rally, making it 12-4. The Cubs and Royals both traded runs in the sixth to make it 13-5, before the game was called due to the weather.

Lumsden pitcher Frank Petryna collected the win on the mound, allowing five runs (two earned) on seven hits with two walks and a strikeout in five and one third innings. Meanwhile, Isaiah Parent took the loss for Prince Albert, surrendering six earned runs on six hits with four walks, while sitting down six batters in three innings of work.

CUBS vs ROYALS – BOX SCORE

Game one of Sunday’s doubleheader with the Blue Jays saw Regina make a late push, but P.A. stood strong to hang on for the win.

After a Carter Krip single put the Royals up one in the first, the Blue Jays found a reply in the third scoring two in the frame to take a 2-1 lead.

Regina doubled the lead in the fourth, before P.A. managed to tie it in the fifth. Alex Moose scored on a wild pitch, and Declan Borthwick advanced to third on the same play. The next batter, Semenchuk, then grounded out allowing Borthwick to score and knot the game at three.

After the Blue Jays scored to retake the lead in the top of the sixth, the Royals rallied for four in the bottom half of the inning, highlighted by a base-clearing triple from Kole McGregor.

In Regina’s last chance in the top of the seventh with the score 7-4, Cooper Brown scored on a fielders choice while Brayden Puetz crossed the plate on a Logan Weatherall single – all with no outs. Luckily, the bats went silent, and P.A. managed three straight outs to hold on for a narrow, 7-6 victory.

Moose was credited with the win for the Royals after giving up four runs (one earned) on four hits with one walk and one strikeout in five and two thirds’ innings. In the same amount of time on the hill, Regina starter Weatherall was handed the loss, allowing six earned runs on four hits with eight walks and two strikeouts.

BLUE JAYS vs ROYALS – BOX SCORE (Game 1)

Game two of Sunday began with some struggles for P.A. as three of Regina’s four runs in the first inning came on wild pitches or passed balls.

However, the Royals were able to make up some ground in the bottom half. Krip ripped a one-out double to left that scored two, which was followed by Owen Tolley-Procyk’s RBI single to center.

It stayed 4-3 Regina until the top of the fifth when the Blue Jays tallied another three-run inning, making it 7-3. They added another run in the sixth as they defeated the Royals by a fistful, 8-3.

Lane Meston was dominant on the bump for Regina, throwing all seven innings while surrendering three runs (none earned) on five hits with three walks and four K’s (strikeouts). On the other end, Robertson took the loss for P.A., giving up four earned runs on two hits with two walks and a strikeout in less than one inning.
