The Battlefords United Football Club (BUFC) had seven teams in Saskatoon this past weekend for the Sask. Cup and Skills Centre tournament, earning a silver medal and multiple MVP awards, while also displaying the tremendous growth of the program.

In the Skills Centre portion of the tournament, BUFC’s younger squads had a blast and showcased their strong skill and development. The U11 Girls team went undefeated with two draws and a win, the U11 Boys dominated their division with three straight wins, and the U13 Boys came out with two wins and a single loss, rounding out a strong weekend for the younger age groups.

BUFC continued their success in the Sask. Cup portion, highlighted by a silver-medal performance from the U15 Boys, who went 2-1 in round robin play, won their semifinal match 2-1, and narrowly fell 1-0 in the championship game. Danny Carlson was named tournament MVP for his outstanding play throughout the weekend, and the team was also awarded the Fair Play Award, recognizing their outstandings sportsmanship.

“It was very successful,” said BUFC Director Kat Huxley. “We’re going to have to build ourselves a trophy display case soon to showcase all of our consistent awards that we’re winning throughout every season for all the teams,” she chuckled.

The club also celebrated a standout performance from Brylee Night of the U17 Girls, who was named tournament MVP as well, helping the team finish with a 1-2 record over the weekend.

The U17 Boys fought hard but managed only a single tie in their three matches. Meanwhile, the U19 Boys closed out their tournament and, for some, their BUFC careers, with a trio of competitive matches that unfortunately didn’t result in a win.

Huxley credited the club’s success to more than just talent.

“The dedication our athletes bring, they work very hard during practice and outside of practice. Also, the dedication from our families, bringing their kids to practice or taking them to camps, as well as our coaching staff too, who spend so much of their time dedicated to growing our athletes and pushing them to the next level,” Huxley said.

With strong showings across all age levels and growing recognition, the BUFC continues to establish itself as a rising force in the Saskatchewan soccer community.
