Melfort Lions Club resurrected after 14-year absence

The Melfort Lions Club is once again back in business.

The club disbanded in 2011 but a recent effort to re-start the service club was successful.

“For the past several months, some Melfort residents assisted by neighbouring Lions clubs have been trying to restart a Lions club in Melfort,” Membership Chair for Saskatchewan Beryl Bauer told northeastNOW. “On Monday night, it happened!”

The organization held an information event at the Melfort Legion this week, and 16 people had previously signed a Charter membership card. Bauer said 20 members were needed to re-establish a Lions club, and four people at the meeting agreed to join.

Since the meeting, two others have been added, and more are pending.

“A Charter has been applied for and Melfort will once again be home to a club belonging to the largest service organization in the world, Lions International,” Bauer said.

An organization meeting was held following the information session. The club elected Lorana McComber as President, Kevin Burroughs as Secretary and Rayanne Humilowich as Treasurer.

The new Melfort Lions Club will hold its first full meeting July 9 at the Seniors Centre, starting at 7 p.m.

“More members will make it an even stronger entity, and interested men and women are welcome to come to the July 9 meeting,” Bauer explained.
