SPSA warns public after attempted trespassing at La Ronge operations base

The Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency (SPSA) is warning the public not to attempt to access the restricted area at the La Ronge Air Operations Base.

On Wednesday, the agency released a statement noting frontline staff reported that a group of individuals were found attempting to trespass at the base on June 16, which led to disrupting the work of staff and increasing the risk of endangering themselves and others.

The release stated at any time, but especially during a wildfire crisis, it is unacceptable for anyone to interfere with wildfire and emergency personnel operations.

During a daily SPSA wildfire update later in the day, President and Fire Commissioner Marlo Pritchard elaborated on the incident, explaining the incident occurred between 4:30 and 5 p.m.

“A group of individuals were seen coming towards and attempted to walk through a gate into the secure area,” he said.

“Our staff stopped them, closed the gates, and as I understand they left, so really, it’s just an advisory for individuals to be aware for their safety, and ours, that there is a reason why there’s gates and fences there to ensure individuals do not come into a secure area where they could potentially get injured.”

Pritchard also remarked the media release had nothing to do with the Saskatchewan NPD’s presence at the operations base that occurred on the same day as the trespassing. They were in a public parking lot to shoot a video.
