Speaking to a large audience at the EA Rawlinson Centre for the Arts, General Manager Cory Philley stated the upcoming season will offer something for all ages.

Wednesday night’s season launch celebration confirmed that commitment by including mention of a special family series; a country Christmas with Canadian music icons Beverly Mahood, Patricia Conroy and Lisa Brokop; and an acoustic performance from Canadian rock legends Glass Tiger.

There’s also ballet, stand up comedy, Teagan Littlechief and the Broadway North Theatre production of Grease. Acknowledging this is her first time assembling a season, Philley told paNOW the process is challenging but added she’s had a lot of help from the facility’s production manager Dannyll Challis.

“You see something an agent has sent you, or you go to a club and you just start bringing in and asking, how much is that and how would we do that and how is the tour working,” she explained.

“So it’s really kind of math and sentiment all curled up together.”

Other highlights of the upcoming season include a comedy show titled Menopause: The Musical 2 (Sept. 22); a one person Circus Act titled Domestikate; and a performance on Oct. 19 featuring Grammy Award winner Paula Cole and platinum selling artist Sophie Hawkins which should thrill the 90’s generation who will be familiar with many hit singles including “As I lay me down” and “I don’t want to wait.”.

When asked about the difficulty about getting big name acts to come to Prince Albert such as Glass Tiger or Paula Cole, Philley said it really is not hard, but added factors include an artist’s tour schedule and even the facility’s availability with an average of over 250 shows each year. Philley also noted the City has in the past hosted Jann Arden, Colin James and even Bryan Adams.

“What’s so cool about it is that you just start the season thinking of it as a blank slate. I just get to talk and talk and talk and then the hard part is whittling it down to you know, 20 or 21 shows. That is really hard,” she explained.

When asked what acts she was most excited about, Philley mentioned the on-stage series that will feature local and Saskatchewan based artists including Cupid’s Heart and Ella Forest. Philley also mentioned her curiosity about an international theatrical group from New Zealand called UPU.

“I’m excited about that because it’s something that involved a whole bunch of different colleagues across the country to get them to you know tour across and you know, actually sentimentally, I’m also really looking forward to the Celtic tenors.”

Anyone wishing to get tickets have access to three kinds of discounts. If you buy three shows, you get a 10 per cent discount. If you buy six shows, it’s a 15 per cent discount, and if you buy all the shows, it’s a 20 per cent discount.

“It doesn’t matter what they are. So you can actually choose from all 21 shows,” Philley said.

She also noted with the family series, they will offer both afternoon and evening show times.

And while purchasing tickets online has long been an option the system itself has been upgraded. Philley said ShowPass is much more user friendly.

“All you have to do to actually purchase the tickets is put your name in and an email address and that’s it.
There’s no huge hullabaloo to make an account.”
