Full health services restored in La Ronge

Communities have been repatriated, fire bans are being lifted, and now northern Saskatchewan has another piece of normal back as the full health care services have been restored in La Ronge.

The Saskatchewan Health Authority made the announcement late Friday that full service has been restored, including the return of long term patients who were evacuated due to the wildfires.

“The SHA acknowledges the impact the wildfires have had on the community of La Ronge and how important the restoration of health-care and wellbeing services are to returning residents,” said Julia Pemberton, Vice President of Integrated Northern Health for the SHA. “Hopefully having fully restored medical services will provide peace of mind for residents while coping with the aftermath of the evacuation and wildfire destruction.”

Some services had already resumed such as the La Ronge Health Centre’s Emergency Services, which opened up again on June 12. Now La Ronge Ambulance services are fully operational as well, and local air transport capabilities were expected to be fully reopened on the morning of June 21.

The La Ronge Medical Clinic is now fully reopened and booking appointments. All other SHA health-care services like health centre in-patient care, primary health care, and mental health and addictions services are fully operational again as well.

“It’s important to not only resume providing emergency and acute care services, but also primary care appointments for management of chronic conditions,” said Dr. Elliot Wilkinson SHA’s Division Lead for La Ronge, and one of the family physicians employed by Northern Medical services. “It was incredible to see how quickly everyone mobilized to get the health centre and the clinic ready to provide health services to our community to support people as they returned home. It took so many skilled and dedicated individuals to rise to the challenge.”

In the release, Pemberton thanked local Indigenous leadership, the Canadian Red Cross, La Ronge Ambulance, Rise Air, and many others for the roles they played in resuming health services in La Ronge.
