Tornado watch issued for the Battlefords

Environment Canada has issued a tornado watch for parts of southwestern Saskatchewan this afternoon and evening, including the Battlefords, that conditions are favourable for the development of funnel clouds, brief tornadoes, and other forms of severe weather.

Along with the potential for weak tornadoes, the region could also experience strong winds, large hail, and heavy rainfall.

Residents are urged to stay alert and take immediate shelter if threatening weather approaches.

In the event of a tornado or a tornado warning, take shelter indoors in a secure room on the lowest floor of your home, such as a basement, interior bathroom, stairwell, or closet, away from windows and outside walls. Avoid mobile homes, vehicles, tents, and trailers, and seek stronger shelter if possible. If no shelter is available, lie in a low-lying area and protect your head from flying debris.

Tornado watches are issued when atmospheric conditions are conducive to the formation of thunderstorms that may produce tornadoes. While no tornado has yet been confirmed, the risk remains elevated throughout the evening.

Stay tuned to Environment Canada for the latest updates and weather alerts. Severe weather can be reported by emailing SKstorm@ec.gc.ca, calling 1-800-239-0484, or posting on social media.
