Former Mintos captain thrilled to be back with team behind bench

Along with hiring a new head coach, the Prince Albert Mintos have also hired a new assistant coach to stand on the bench next season.

Following the departures of Frank Fazio and Cory Trann as last season’s co-bench bosses, the team has appointed Chase Friedt-Mohr to fill their shoes. He’ll join Brian Glynn who is set to return next season and head coach Dion Antisin.

It’s a full circle moment for Friedt-Mohr as he returns to the team he captained just five years ago. The Prince Albert native played two seasons with the Mintos from 2018-2020, suiting up for 82 games while scoring 48 points (10G-38A) from the blueline.

When asked how it feels to be back in his hometown, he said he wouldn’t want to be anywhere else.

“It’s great, obviously. Grew up playing all my minor hockey and that in Prince Albert, spent a couple seasons with the Mintos and [I] can’t say anything bad about them really – first class all the way around. To be able to finish up my hockey career and come back to P.A., where I grew up, is definitely something that’s very special to me.”

The 21-year-old also brings Major Junior, Junior A, and post-secondary playing experience to the team. He spent parts of four seasons in the Western Hockey League (WHL) with the Spokane Chiefs, Edmonton Oil Kings, and Tri-City Americans, won a Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) title with the Melfort Mustangs in 2024 and the playoff MVP award, and appeared in three games for the University of Regina in USports last season.

“Every team has that guy, that players coach, right? Always checking in on the players, making sure they’re okay, but also help promote in a positive and kind of friendly manner,” he explained, when asked about how he’ll use his playing experience in his first year of coaching. “Just coming out of [playing], I’m up to date with lots of different skills and what it takes to get to the next level. And that’s something I want to incorporate with the athletes here.”

Since moving back home, Friedt-Mohr has joined the ranks of the Prince Albert Police Service, where he’ll grow his career as a police officer.

In May, the Mintos announced the hiring of Antisin as the club’s next head coach following the departure of Doan Smith, who lasted just one season and is now on the bench for the Prince Albert Raiders.

Last season, the Mintos finished eighth in the Sask. Male AAA Hockey League (SMAAAHL) standings and lost out of the playoffs in the first round to the eventual provincial and Telus Cup (National) Champion Regina Pat Canadians.
