A man responsible for a serious assault last Fall in Red Wing, where the victim had his throat cut and was barricaded in a room, has changed his pleas and is now awaiting sentencing.

On Thursday, Brian Arcand’s trial did not go ahead as scheduled at Prince Albert Provincial Court, and instead, a number of guilty pleas were entered by his lawyer, Tim Nolan, including aggravated assault, confinement and break-and-enter.

Not guilty pleas had initially been entered last November.

The assault occurred at a home in Red Wing on September 29, 2024.

According to facts read in court by Crown Prosecutor MaryAnne Larson, Arcand had initially gone to the victim’s home and entered by way of a side window. He was later observed leaving with the victim, and they both got into a truck and left.

Later that day, the victim was found walking along a road in the area and was covered in blood. He had deep lacerations to his throat, a large head wound and a swollen eye.

In a statement provided to police, he described how he had been invited to Arcand’s home and was then attacked with a knife and confined to a room in the basement. A piece of furniture was used to block the door, and it took the victim roughly two hours managed to escape.

Arcand was arrested on October 1.

A sentencing date will be set on July 2. A pre-sentence report has also been ordered, which will canvass Arcand’s personal history.
