Sewer flushing underway in east Meadow Lake

Jun 26, 2025 | 9:13 AM

City crews have begun flushing sanitary sewer mains on the east of Meadow Lake, part of a three-week preventative maintenance program aimed at keeping the system running efficiently.

The work started Thursday and will continue daily until completion, according to a notice issued by the City of Meadow Lake.

“This is a regular preventative maintenance activity that must be conducted to ensure the sewer system is operating efficiently,” the city stated. “Every effort will be made to minimize the disruption and inconvenience to residents in the area.”

The process involves using a high-pressure nozzle to flush water through the sewer system, while debris such as grease, grit and sand is removed via vacuum truck.

While most homeowners will not experience any disruptions, the city is advising residents to take precautions. Air movement during the flushing may occasionally cause water to splash out of toilets, sinks and drains—especially in homes with inadequate plumbing venting.

To reduce the risk of water damage, residents are urged to close toilet lids, insert drain plugs when not in use, check backwater valves for debris, and cap basement floor drains. In the event of odours, running water through different drains and opening windows is recommended.

Drivers are also asked to be cautious around work crews.

Updates on the project will be posted to the City of Meadow Lake’s website and Facebook page. Residents with questions can contact City Hall at (306) 236-3622.
