The action starts tonight at Prime Minister’s Park, where the U17 Astros softball team will help build the excitement for the upcoming World Softball Championships in July.

The local squad will face a U19 team from New Zealand. It’s a double-header that starts at 6 p.m., and a traditional ‘Haka’ will be performed before the first game. The New Zealand team is part of a softball developmental program that is travelling throughout Saskatchewan and Manitoba over the next few weeks. They’ll return to Prince Albert to cheer on their native team when the Men’s Softball World Cup starts on July 8.

If you’re around Emma Lake this Saturday, Codie Prevost will be performing a special Canada Day event at 129 Janice Place.

Canada Day celebrations take place at Kinsmen Park from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The family-friendly festival by the Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 2 will have entertainment and food. Then the festivities move to the Riverbank. At 4 p.m., the multicultural society will begin a lineup of cultural performances, kids’ activities, food trucks and fireworks at dusk.

Prince Albert tourist attractions will also be open on Canada Day, including Diefenbaker House and the Rotary Museum of Police and Corrections. The Prince Albert Historical Museum downtown will offer free admission.

The City of Prince Albert’s Summer Playground Program starts on July 2. It runs Monday to Friday and offers free drop-in activities for kids ages six to 12 across 10 locations in the city. It’s led by trained Playground Supervisors. No registration is required.

Now that the imminent wildfire risk has passed, the Resort Village of Candle Lake is ready to welcome back visitors. They’re inviting everyone to take part in this year’s Canada Day Parade, even with short notice. It starts at the Saskatchewan Parks Visitor Centre. Participants should arrive by 10:30 a.m. The lower portion of the Waskateena parking lot will be closed to the public on Canada Day, from 7:00 AM until after the fireworks display.

The Shellbrook Swimming Pool is offering free public admission on Canada Day from one p.m. to six p.m.

In Birch Hills, festivities get underway with a bike parade starting at the post office at 11:30 a.m. Games and activities will be held on the sports grounds, and fireworks will take place at dusk.
