Let’s get it poppin’!

The sky over Prince Albert will soon be lit up with a wide array of colours.

As per the City of Prince Albert’s bylaw, Canada Day is one of only two days during the year when fireworks are permitted on private properties, and you can do so from dusk to 11 p.m.

The City’s Fire Department is reminding people of some of the rules and safety options.

“I can remind residents that fireworks cannot be used on any public property like parks or playgrounds or off any street,” Battalion Chief Dwayne Belton said.

With respect to private properties, Belton said users must keep them in an open area and away from combustibles and buildings. Users, who must be over the age of 18, should also be mindful of neighbours and not consume alcohol while setting off fireworks.

“Injuries and accidents happen, so it’s always a concern for us at the fire hall,” he said.

Belton also noted the popularity of sparklers, which he said can burn up to 1500°C

“They can ignite clothing very quickly and people have received some severe burns so you know a safer alternative is the glow sticks or the confetti poppers.”

Belton also reminded local residents there is a professional show happening at 10:30 p.m.

“So grab a blanket and a can of bug spray and go down to the river.”
