Melfort Youth Evolution wraps up Pride Month with annual walk

Jul 2, 2025 | 4:59 PM

The fourth annual Pride Walk in Melfort took place Monday evening – the culmination of a month long celebration each June that recognizes the 2SLGBTQ+ community and acknowledges the ongoing struggle for equal rights and justice.

Melfort Youth Evolution (MYE) started the event at the North East Outreach and Support Services building with poster making right before the walk.

“We had about 25 people come out and walk, and it was a lot of the regulars that we’ve seen for the past few years, so it was really great to see them come back. This walk is very important to us because in Melfort and area, you don’t see a lot happening for Pride Month, so I feel when we first started this, our intentions were to bring people who are comfortable to walk the streets of Melfort and bring support into the community,” said MYE member Mikayla Kaminski.

“I guess our message is don’t be afraid to show your true colours and don’t care about what other people say. It’s a small town, but it’s one day that you get to go on a walk, enjoy summer, and just be yourself.”

Other pride celebrations during the month included a flag-raising ceremony at the United Church, a donut fundraiser, and painted scenes by a local Indigenous artist.

Melfort Youth Evolutions’ motto or slogan is ‘For Youth Pride’, aimed at including everyone, no matter what.

“We’re wanting to include everyone and anyone, no matter their race, religion, sexuality, gender, or anything, we want everyone to be included in Melfort and around. I think we find it really important, because it’s just one of those things where you want youth to feel as if they belong in the community,” Kaminski added.

“I think our community is becoming more accepting, for example, when the church did their flag raising, that was definitely a big step. I do think we’ve grown as a community to become more accepting and inclusive.”

The hope is that more people will attend next year’s walk, which will likely take place earlier in the month. The group felt that this year’s attendance would have been much higher had it not run during the Canada Day long weekend.
