A man who stabbed another man in the back five times, was high on crystal meth and was experiencing paranoia.

Those were the details shared in a Prince Albert courtroom on Wednesday, before 33-year-old Gabe Ross received a 30-month sentence for aggravated assault and resisting arrest.

The case dates back to last December and an incident that occurred at a home in the 800 block of 17th St. W.

According to the agreed statement of facts read by Crown Prosecutor Wyatt Bernier, Ross and the victim both lived at the house, and in the early morning hours the victim left his room to go to the bathroom.

While returning to his room he was attacked by Ross and yelled out for help. Another resident of the home quickly responded and found both men in the hallway.

“I didn’t know what I was doing. I’m very sorry for this,” Ross was overhead saying before fleeing from the house.

Upon being located by police, Ross initially gave a false name and threw a punch at the arresting officer but missed.

Ross then continued to ignore police commands resulting in a Conducted Energy Weapon (CEW) being deployed. The CEW was however unsuccessful and Ross continued to flee on foot before being arrested shortly after.

Bernier said the victim’s injuries, which included a collapsed lung, were treated in hospital and with the exception of multiple scars, he has since made a full recovery.

With credit for time spend time spent in pre-sentence custody, Ross has about a year and eight months left to serve and will then be subject to an 18-month probation.

He’s also prohibited for life from owning or possessing any weapons.

Noting her client’s mental health and cognitive issues, legal aid lawyer Tara Hetherington said Ross does very well when he is sober and taking medications. He has since found employment by working in the kitchen at the jail.

Ross’s mother was also in court to show support for her son.
