Construction begins on new group homes in Biggar

Two new group homes and a day program in Biggar mark a significant step forward in supporting adults with intellectual disabilities in the province.

Construction on the project just got underway. It is a collaborative effort between the Government of Saskatchewan, the Town of Biggar and non-profit organization Farm in the Dell which provides residential and vocational opportunities for adults with developmental disabilities in a supportive, farm-based environment.

Social Services Minister Terry Jenson joined the group to celebrate the beginning of construction on the five-bedroom homes, which will each accommodate up to five people. Alongside the homes, a new day program operated by Farm in the Dell will serve up to 20 individuals.

“We are happy to see the start of this important project for Farm in the Dell,” said Jenson.

“This project represents our government’s commitment to supporting initiatives that allow individuals with disabilities to live and participate in a supportive environment tailored to their needs,” he added.

The project builds on a partnership between the Ministry of Social Services and Farm in the Dell, first announced in September 2024. Funding includes up to $2.1 million from the province, $500,000 from Farm in the Dell, and $350,000 from the Town of Biggar.

Farm in the Dell, which already operates residential and vocational programs near Aberdeen, said the Biggar location marks a significant expansion of their unique model.

“We are deeply grateful for the Government of Saskatchewan’s partnership and commitment to our expansion project in Biggar. This initiative will offer not just a safe and caring home, but meaningful work opportunities and a vibrant social life within a rewarding farm environment,” said Lynette Zacharias, executive director of Farm in the Dell.

Biggar Mayor Jim Rickwood praised the initiative as a reflection of the community’s values and spirit.

“The Town of Biggar’s commitment to this worthy project is not only from the heart, but a testament to what a community can achieve when welcoming those that may need a little extra in a familiar and supportive rural setting,” Rickwood said.

“We are honoured to be a partner in establishing and providing continued support for this glorious addition to our amazing prairie skyline,” he added.

Once completed, the Ministry of Social Services will provide annual operational funding to sustain the new homes and the day program.
