Beavers end season on a high note, ready for playoff run

The North Battleford Beavers closed out their regular season with a win on Thursday night, shutting out the Standard Hill Lakers 10-0 in a six-inning mercy rule victory to finish second overall in the North Saskatchewan River Baseball League (NSRBL) with an impressive 11-2 record.

The Beavers wasted no time getting on the board, scoring twice in the second inning before exploding for five more runs in the fourth, highlighted by a three-run homer from Andrew Hudec. They added a single run in the sixth to go up 8-0, and Skyler Dimmick sealed the deal with a two-run shot to make it 10-0. When the Lakers were held scoreless in the bottom half of the inning, the mercy rule was invoked, ending the game after six.

“It’s always good to end the season strong, you never want to take any game lightly, especially against Standard Hill, who’s one of the top teams in the league. We just wanted to make sure we kept that winning mentality going through, keeping the bats going and just playing fundamental defense,” said Andrew.

On the mound, Bob Hudec delivered five shutout innings, effectively shutting down the Lakers lineup. Then Andrew came in to close things out in the sixth, completing the shutout.

Apart from the two homers, Chris Hudec also stood out offensively going 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored.

With the regular season wrapped up, the Beavers now turn their attention to the postseason, where they will take on the 7th ranked Glaslyn Orioles.

“Our pitching is going to be one of the most important things going into the playoffs. We have one of the top pitching staff, so getting a good outing from the mound is huge, good bats and then good defense, that’s been one of our better things this year. Glaslyn is one of the teams that for sure puts the ball in play, so we have to be sharp on defense,” Andrew said.

As the Beavers gear up for the playoffs, Andrew said the team is placing extra emphasis on consistency.

“Consistency throughout the entire lineup is something we want to focus on. Sometimes we’ve had runners on base in games we lost, where a timely hit would’ve made the difference. That’s probably the biggest thing we’re kind of looking for in the playoffs,” he said.

Game one against Glaslyn will be on Tuesday, July 8 at 7:30 p.m. at Beavers Lions Stadium.
