PLANNED OUTAGE

Planned power outage to affect Meadow Lake, northwest communities next week

More than 13,000 SaskPower customers in Northwestern Saskatchewan will lose power overnight next week as crews work to upgrade infrastructure in the region.

The company noted the planned outage will run from midnight to 6 a.m. on July 9. Communities affected include Meadow Lake, Loon Lake, Dore Lake, Waterhen Lake, Beauval, Pinehouse, Buffalo Narrows, Patuanak, La Loche and Turnor Lake.

Joel Cherry, a SaskPower spokesperson, said the work is needed to safely install a second transformer at the Meadow Lake switching station, a project aimed at making the power system more reliable.

“To do that work safely, we need to have this planned outage,” he said, adding that a second transformer will help prevent unexpected blackouts in the future. “If a transformer has an outage, we won’t lose power, and it will also make us ready for future power upgrades in the area.”

Another similar planned outage will be needed in the coming weeks, with more information to be shared later.

“Doing the work now means that we have a stronger, more resilient system for years to come,” Cherry said.
