Midtown Hall playground burned in early morning blaze

At around 7:02 a.m. on Saturday, July 7, the Prince Albert Police Service was called out to Midtown Hall where one of the city’s newest play parks was set ablaze. By the time police arrived, the fire department was already one scene.

As of now, the park that only opened up last August is now surrounded by police tape, although the spray park portion of the park is still currently accessible. According to PAPS Sergeant Dwight Leblue, they are still searching for a cause and a suspect, and people should stay away from the spray park itself even though it isn’t surrounded by police tape.

“We’re trying to get a hold of the property owners to let them know, and that way they can get it cleaned up and that way it’s safe for the kids.”

For bystanders who walk by the wreckage of the pirate ship themed park, you may notice a few spray painted tags that relate to gang activity. While that is definitely being considered as part of the investigation, it’s still too early to tell if the fire itself was gang related.

“I don’t know if that’s even connected to that or not. You see those tags all over the city and it’s hard to say. We just don’t know if that’s the case for that or not. That (tag) could have been there for a long time.”

Police are asking for anyone from the public that may have information on the burned park to contact them at (306) 953-4222, or submit their tip anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).

The fence was cut open for fire department access, and the spray park has been left without police tape around it, but the public is asked to stay away from the area for the time being. (paNow Staff/Nick Nielsen)
