The first weekend of softball provincials has come and gone in Saskatchewan and a trio of Prince Albert-based squads finished with medals, with one team punching their ticket to Nationals.

The U17 Astros were crowned champions in Laird this past weekend, coming out on top of the four-team tournament.

P.A. started their run with a 6-2 win over the Laird Valley Vikings on Friday, which was followed by an 18-1 decimation of the Saskatoon Selects on Saturday morning, and a 14-0 rout of Treaty 4 Okanese later that afternoon.

The Astros and Okanese met again on Sunday in the finals and although not the same score, P.A. still came out on top with a 7-1 victory to capture the provincial title and a seat at the U17 Men’s Canadian Fast Pitch Championships, which is scheduled to be played in Napanee, Ont. from Aug. 6-10.

Meanwhile, the U11 Astros were in Saskatoon along with the U15 team where they both brought home bronze.

For the U11’s, they started off on the wrong foot on Friday by falling 23-2 to the Parkland Wildcats Blue. They also dropped their second contest of the tournament to the Langham Vikings, 5-2.

On Saturday though, the team turned a new leaf and began to light up the competition. The began with a 6-0 shutout of the Saskatoon Selects before downing the Parkland Wildcats Green 6-2. The two wins pushed them into the bronze medal game where they faced off with Langham. Unfortunately, the run at the crown ended there as the Vikings toppled P.A. 9-6. The Vikings advanced to the gold medal game, which was later won by the Parkland Wildcats Green.

The U15’s also had a rough start by dropping their first game 11-7 on Friday to the Rosebud Royals but bounced back later that same day with a 10-0 triumph over Treaty 4 Thunderstrikers. They followed that up with an identical 10-0 win against the Valley Blue Jays on Saturday morning and ended off the round robin with a bang, steamrolling the Saskatoon Selects 16-1.

On Championship Sunday, the Astros faced off against the Blue Jays where they returned the favour, taking down P.A. 10-0 and sending the ‘stros to the bronze medal game. There, they faced the Parkland Wildcats and won a nailbiter, 6-5 to capture third.
