U18 Royals clinch spot at AA Tier 1 provincials following five straight wins

Jul 8, 2025 | 5:55 PM

The Prince Albert U18 Royals have been on a hot streak in the Sask. Premier AA Baseball League (SPBLAA).

Over the past week, the Royals played five games and they’ve won all five, improving their record from 6-12 to 11-12 and securing a spot at the 18U AA Tier 1 Provincial Championships in Estevan during the July 26-27 weekend.

P.A. kicked off the streak by snapping a two-game skid against the Sask Five Giants at home on July 2. The Royals were hot coming out of the gate, going up 3-0 in the first inning with an Isaiah Parent RBI-double and a two-run double from Jaxson Robertson.

They continued to extend the lead over the next three innings, scoring one per as P.A. led 6-0 at the end of the fourth. The Giants finally managed to get a run across in the top of the sixth and made a dent into the Royals lead while doing so. After back-to-back singles and with runners on the corners, Eric Menzies managed to steal home on a ball to get Sask Five on the board. The following at bat, Reis Jamieson scored on a passed ball and Austin Kasahoff did the same one batter later as the score was now 6-3.

P.A. summoned Carter Martin from the bullpen in the seventh to close out the game. He walked the first batter he faced and then managed to get the second batter to ground into a double play. He then gave up back-to-back singles before getting Menzies to ground out to end the threat, and get the win for the Royals.

Parent was given the win on the mound for Prince Albert, allowing just three hits and one walk with three strikeouts in three innings. For the Giants, Grady McMahon was credited with the loss after giving up five runs on eight hits with one walk in three innings.

The Royals continued to roll over the weekend when they played back-to-back doubleheaders. The first was on July 5 when P.A. welcomed the East Central Red Sox to Andy Zwack Field.

Game one began with the Red Sox striking first in the top of the third when Colton Pries smacked a two-run single to center. The next at bat, Pries managed to steal second before advancing to third on a passed ball. He scored that same at bat on another passed ball to give East Central a 3-0 lead.

Prince Albert had a response in the bottom of the fifth when they managed to load the bases with no outs. That set up Declan Borthwick to line a two-RBI single to the shortstop to cut into the lead. After P.A. loaded the bases again and surrendered a double play, Robertson smacked a three-run home run to left to give the Royals the lead and then some, as they now were up 5-3.

An inning later in the sixth, P.A. continued to stay hot as Owen Tolley-Procyk lined a double to score Martin, and Tye Semenchuk blooped a single to score Tolley-Procyk to extend the lead to five.

The Red Sox didn’t quit though, managing to score on a routine ground ball to make it 7-4. That’s as close as East Central would come, however, as Prince Albert locked it down for the win.

In addition to the home run, Robertson also got the win on the mound as the starter for P.A., throwing five innings complete innings while allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits with five walks and four K’s. Red Sox starter Noah Brenner allowed seven runs on nine hits with four walks and one strikeout.

Game two was all gas and no breaks for either offence as both sides posted double digit scores.

P.A. got the party started in the top of the first when Tolley-Procyk knocked in Martin with a double and later scored on a wild pitch.

Up 2-0 in the bottom of the first, the Red Sox replied by feeding the Royals a fistful, scoring three of their five runs in the inning by error or wild pitch.

That’s when the bats exploded for Prince Albert as they hung 11 runs in the top of the second, going through the order twice making 13-5 at the bottom of the second.

The two teams continued to trade runs over the next couple innings and by the fourth, the score was 15-9. After East Central made it 15-11, the Royals managed one run in the sixth to make it a five run game before exploding again in the seventh, adding another six to the tally. The defence managed a three up, three down inning as the Royals prevailed with a 22-11 victory.

P.A. combined for 38 at bats in the win, highlighted by three hit performances from Tolley-Procyk and Borthwick. Royals starter Kole McGregor threw three innings, allowing nine runs (seven earned) on seven hits with six walks and three strikeouts, while Red Sox starter Pries lasted just 1.1 innings, allowing 11 runs on three hits with eight walks and three strikeouts.

On Sunday, Prince Albert returned to Andy Zwack Field for their second doubleheader of the weekend, this time taking on the Regina Wolfpack.

After Robertson lined an RBI double gave the Royals the lead in the bottom of the first, the Wolfpack rallied for three in the top of the second to take the lead. An inning later in the third, P.A. replied with three runs of their own to take back the one run lead.

The following inning in the fourth, P.A. took a note from their play on Saturday and blew up for a six-run inning, highlighted by a two RBI double from Carter Krip. They added two more in the fifth before Regina began to mount a comeback.

The Wolfpack got three runs across in the sixth and another four in the seventh to make it 13-10. However, the comeback attempt was diffused when Tristen Donaldson flew out to center for the final out in game one.

Collecting the win on the bump was Tolley-Procyk who allowed six runs on seven hits with one walk and five K’s in 5.2 innings. Meanwhile, Jamie Schneider wasn’t so fortunate for Regina as he surrendered 11 runs on 15 hits with five walks and two strikeouts in four complete innings of work.

Game two was also a high scoring contest between the P.A. and Regina, however, the score was lopsided in favour of the home team.

The Royals bats were booming to start off the game, hanging three runs in the first and four in the second to go up 7-0 by the third.

There, the Wolfpack broke the goose egg and found some offence, putting up three in the inning. But the Royals offence just couldn’t stop scoring as in the bottom half of the third, they added another four runs to make the score 11-3.

After no offence in the fourth and fifth, the Wolfpack managed to cut into the lead in the sixth by getting two across. But P.A., like earlier, had an answer and posted another four runs in the frame to make it a 10 run ballgame. The game was called ahead of the start of the seventh as the Royals capped off their two weekend doubleheaders with a statement 15-5 win.

Martin tossed a complete game for Prince Albert to collect the win, allowing five runs on 11 hits with three strikeouts. His opposite, Josh Manwaring, was handed the loss for the Wolfpack, allowing 11 runs (10 earned) on 13 hits with one strikeout in just three innings.

Following the mighty successful week, the five wins propelled the Royals into the eighth spot in the SPBLAA standings just in time for the provincial seeding cutoff, granting Prince Albert a berth in the 18U AA Tier 1 Provincial Championships.

Prior to that though, the Royals have to finish their regular season schedule, which continues on Wednesday as they look to continue their winning ways when they travel to Martensville to rematch with the Sask Five Giants.
