McCormick to lead Northlands College through significant transformation

It’s been a little over one month since Michael McCormick has been announced as the new president and chief executive officer of Northlands College.

McCormick, who has formally been in the role since June 1, started with Northlands in 2023 as the vice-president of finance, administration and sustainability. He has been given a one-year term as the board of directors recruit and hire someone to lead the college permanently.

Born in Canada but raised in Zimbabwe, McCormick has a wide range of experience in management in both a private and governmental capacity. He received a degree in economics from the University of Toronto, a mini-masters of business administration from McGill University and a project management certification from Bates Project Management Inc.

McCormick was most recently employed by Brandon University where he was the senior lead in facilities.

“I got a lot of exposure at Brandon University in terms of the dynamics of education and how to support education, build capital, be customer centric both from a student face and an academic face,” he said.

McCormick explained over the next year, he will work to stabilize Northlands as it undergoes a restructuring which began about eight months ago. He noted the college will be organized into three branches under a vice-president of finance, a vice-president of student services and a vice-president of academics.

“There’s a lot of work ahead,” McCormick added.

“There’s definitely goals and key performance indicators for the college to see where we go and how we perform. As the next part of that phase of a realignment is to recruit and hire a permanent CEO. That will hopefully be coming out in the fall.”

Northlands Chairperson Nick Daigneault believes McCormick will be essential in guiding the college through a period of significant transformation in a regional, national and global scale.

“His extensive background in sustainable operations, human rights, and public service brings invaluable perspective and strength to our leadership,” Daigneault is quoted as saying in a recent media release.

McCormick has been the acting-CEO since Karsten Henriksen left the college in November 2024.
