Beavers advance after sweeping Orioles in first-round series

The North Battleford Beavers punched their ticket to the second round of the playoffs in the North Sask. River Baseball League (NSRBL) after completing a two-game sweep of the Glaslyn Orioles, winning Game 2 by a score of 14-7 on Wednesday night.

After a dominant 9-1 win in Game 1 on Tuesday, the Beavers faced a much tougher battle in Game 2, but a massive fourth inning and some clutch performances helped them pull away and seal the series.

“We were definitely expecting a good game from Glaslyn. They had some really consistent bats throughout the lineup, so there were really no easy outs,” said Beavers player Andrew Hudec.

Game 2 started in back-and-forth fashion as the Beavers jumped ahead 1-0 in the top of the first, but Glaslyn quickly answered to tie it 1-1 after one. The teams traded blows again in the second, with North Battleford taking a 3-1 lead before the Orioles responded to even it at 3-3.

North Battleford surged ahead again in the third, going up 5-3, but once again the Orioles clawed back to tie it 5-5 heading into the fourth.

That’s when the Beavers’ bats exploded.

Fueled by timely hitting throughout the order, North Battleford plated eight runs in the top of the fourth to break the game wide open, taking a commanding 13-5 lead. Glaslyn tried to mount a late comeback, adding two more runs, but the Beavers tacked on one more insurance run in the final innings to close out the 14-7 win.

Skyler Dimmick was named game MVP, crushing a home run and making several key defensive plays at second base to help preserve the lead. On the mound, Gavin Nolin started and pitched the first three innings, before turning things over to Caleb Hoiseth, who closed out the final frames to secure the win.

“Going into the next series, it’s going to be the same thing that we were focusing on in the first round. Just trying to play sound defence and getting those timely hits. We have a consistent lineup from one to nine, so it’s just a matter of which guy steps up at the right moment and that’s something we’ve been able to do all year and something we really count on,” Hudec said.

The Beavers now await their next opponent, as other first-round series are still ongoing. Regardless of who they face, North Battleford will have home-field advantage in Round 2.
