The two large cranes hoisting up materials as part of the Victoria Hospital’s expansion have become a well recognized part of the Prince Albert skyline since they’ve arrived. Now thanks to some students in the city, those two towering cranes officially have names.

The Boreal Healthcare Foundation recently invited elementary school students to take part in their ‘Name the Crane’ contest. The kids were tasked with creating some art and coming up with names for the cranes.

The first name chosen was ‘Ooga Booga’ submitted by Klyde Spicer, and the second was a clever play on words with ‘Doctor Crane’ submitted by Nixon Sanderson.

As a result of their artwork and names being chosen as the winners, both Spicer and Sanderson were able to treat their classes to a pizza party, got shirts with their artwork on them, and even got a behind the scenes tour of the PCL construction site.

“It was incredible to see their faces light up,” said Cody Barnett, CEO of the Boreal Healthcare Foundation. “These cranes represent so much more than construction, they symbolize a community coming together to build something better for the future. And it’s the kids who remind us exactly why we’re doing this.”

As part of the tour, the kids even had their own miniature models of the cranes lowered down to them out of the sky by the real thing.

Right now, the hospital expansion is about a quarter of the way completed.
