‘Dreams come true’: Dancers make special performances at Disney World

Dancers from La Ronge and Prince Albert recently travelled to Florida to participate in special performances at Disney World.

“It was just kind of like this dream come true and it was such a magical experience from the start to the finish,” said Tri-Community Dance Club chairperson Genevieve Candelora Kustiak, who noted 10 dancers from La Ronge were part of the showcase.

“It was really cool. We stayed right on the resort, so everything was kind of accessible there, and the families were able to spend time together and take in some of the other experiences that Orlando has to offer.”

The trip was in partnership with Prince Albert’s Performing Arts Warehouse, which also sent 13 of its own dancers. The group arrived on July 6, did rehearsals the following day, and performed on July 8.

The dancers participated in the parade at Disney Springs, an outdoor shopping, dining, and entertainment complex at the Walt Disney World Resort in the morning. They did a second performance at Epcot’s Dance the World Showcase that afternoon.

On Wednesday, the dancers took part in a workshop organized by a Disney chorographer. They were able to put together a two-and-a-half minute routine as part of an experience that gave them an inside look as to what it would be like to be a dancer for world-renowned entertainment company.

“That evening we had the Dance the World Gala. It was lots of fun. It was kind of like a big celebration,” Kustiak said, adding they were joined by Mickey Mouse and Friends.

“We started the preparation a year ago, so it was kind of a far off dream at the beginning and, as we got a little bit closer, we started learning the chorography for the parade and we started having rehearsals. We were practicing a few times a week and just really focusing a lot on preparing for our performances.”

Thirteen-year-old Christina McDougald of La Ronge was one of the dancers who attended. She said her favourite part of attending was performing, meeting new people and dancing with members of the Performing Arts Warehouse. Another highlight for her was the workshop.

“It was really fun. It was a unique time learning new dance moves and learning a dance that actual people like Disney dancers would learn,” she said.

“It was a fun experience feeling what it feels like to dance like what a Disney dancer would do in rehearsals.”

McDougald traveled with her mom, Chandra, and the two of them were able to spend time bonding together as well. They were able to visit Magic Kingdom, as well as Cape Canaveral, the United States’ premier rocket test and launching site.
