New Tuesday evening hours at Meadow Lake Farmers’ Market aim to boost access

Shoppers in Meadow Lake who can’t make it to the farmers’ market on Fridays during the day will soon have another options, as a new Tuesday evening market is set to roll out as a summer trial.

Glenn McCrimmon, vice-president of the Meadow Lake Farmers’ Market Board, said the idea came directly from residents who struggle to make it to the daytime hours of 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. because they’re at work.

“So at our last AGM (Annual General Meeting), we decided that we would try a night market or an evening market just to see if we can accommodate those other people,” he said.

The new market will run every Tuesday from 5 to 7 p.m., starting July 15 and continuing through to Sept. 9 as a pilot project.

“We’ve had good response from the community and hopefully with this trial we can get a good response as well and maybe this will become a permanent feature of the market.”

He added they waited until mid-July to ensure more fresh vegetables would be available, as most produce isn’t ready until the first week of the month.

“When the veggies are in, it’s busy for that first hour — I mean people line up out the door when we open at 10,” he said.

The market, now in its 26th year, has operated out of a tent at the Home Hardware Building Centre parking lot for the past four years. McCrimmon said the new evening market will feature many of the same vendors and goods that regular Friday shoppers have come to expect.

“There’ll be baking and jams and jellies and there’ll be some soap, other sewing crafts. … We’ll have a lot of the same products that we have on a Friday.”
