Fifteen-year-old Shae Maunula from the Battlefords pulled off a clutch final round performance at the Saskatchewan Junior Golf Provincials this past weekend, climbing from 12th place to finish sixth and secure a coveted spot at the National tournament.

Held at the challenging Lloydminster Golf and Country Club, the tournament featured three rounds of play from the back tees. Maunula posted scores of 80, 77, and a sizzling 74 in the final round, good enough for a three-day total of +15. It also secured him a ticket to Bathurst, New Brunswick, where nationals will be held at Gowan Brae Golf and Country Club.

However, going into the final round, Maunula knew he had work to do.

“I was one under on the front nine and then going into the back, I had not done great on the first three holes throughout the weekend, so that was definitely going through my mind,” he said. “It kind of got to me for the first couple holes, and then after that, I really figured it out for the last four holes.”

Those final four holes — birdie, par, birdie, par — were critical. They pushed him into a sudden-death playoff for sixth overall and a national qualifying spot.

The playoff, held on a 400-yard par-4, didn’t start smoothly for Maunula.

“I ended up only hitting my tee shot 130 yards, so I had like 270 to hit when he only had 150,” Maunula recalled. “We ended up putting our approach shots in the same spot and we both chipped to like 15 feet and I made mine, and he didn’t.”

With the pressure on, the young golfer from the Battlefords delivered and now, heading to Nationals, he is hoping to do the same.

“You just have to play your own game and just focus on what you can control,” Maunula said. “My main goal [at Nationals] would be to make the cut, just hit quality shots, and have some fun.”

Maunula will continue to test his skills this weekend at the Golf Saskatchewan Men’s Amateur Championship in Humboldt.

Apart from Maunula, The Battlefords were well-represented at the Provincials. Shae’s sister, Natalie Maunula, took third in the U15 Girls division with a +77. Finn Silver finished 21st from the back tees at +24, while Hayden Solomko carded a +41 from the front tees, good for 11th place.
