La Ronge Elks Fair returns after bumpy 2024 event

Residents should be aware of the extra security measures in place if attending the La Ronge Elks Fair.

The service club has contracted eight team members through 306 Tactical Security at a cost of nearly $21,000.

Over the last two years, there has been an increase in incidents involving bear spray and other disruptive behaviour. The hiring of highly trained security personnel is a proactive measure to protect fair attendees.

“As you walk in, we’ve got security here now,” explained Elks member Curtis Skalicky.

“They are hand-checking all of the bags, and they are wanding people who come in. We want to try and eliminate some of the issues that happened last year, and a big thanks to the tri-community leadership who graciously contributed to the cost of the security this year.”

There are about 20 rides and 14 vendors selling wares or food at this year’s La Ronge Elks Fair. Local vendors include Ella’s Kitchen, FiliBeans and Little Town Coffee Co.

The fair is a major fundraiser for the Elks Club as it generates tens of thousands of dollars over the three days. Organizers expect 3,000 to 5,000 attendees each day.

“It varies from year to year, but we do very well,” Skalicky noted.

“The money we raise here goes directly back into the community and helps. We all know there is a new long-term care facility coming in here, and we’re going to be contributing some money to that for sure.”

Over the weekend, Skalicky added it takes about 100 volunteers to make the event a success. While many of the volunteers come from the club itself, others are from Children’s North and the Youth Travel Club.

Environment and Climate Change Canada is forecasting ideal weather for the event. There are clear and sunny skies on Friday with a high of 23 C, while Saturday is expected to be clear and 25 C. A mix of sun and cloud and a high of 24 is forecasted for Sunday.
