Nelson turns up his game to win Junior Northern title

Jul 21, 2025 | 6:07 PM

Over 32 participants put their best swings forward at Cooke Municipal Golf Course for the annual Junior Northern Golf Tournament.

The event ended with Wyatt Nelson of Prince Albert taking first place with a two-day total of 148.

Golf course general manager Darcy Myers said the competition was tight in the championship flight division.

“There were three shots between first and fourth,” said Myers. “We also had a really good showing from our younger kids. Wyatt Nelson was the champion, and he’s really turned up his game here lately and, yeah, it’s just a great event for these kids to get in a little competition.”

Lincoln Rogers finished second with a two-day total of 149, followed by Brady Guenther at 150. Hudson McDougall shot 151, good enough for fourth place. Rounding out the championship flight was Kaleb Cournoyer (152), Jack Simonson (155), Burke Morrison (162) and Ronan McDougall (172).

The Junior Northern event has taken place for more than thirty years. Myers said it’s great to see the growth of players over the years, many of whom are multi-disciplinary athletes. Nelson, for example, will spend this upcoming hockey season as a goalie for the Prince Albert Mintos.

“It’s just a great opportunity for kids to keep busy and show their talents.”

Up next at Cooke Municipal Golf Course is the 104th Men’s Northern Amateur Championships on August long weekend. Myers said it’s a full event with 112 golfers.

The course, he said, is ‘immaculate’ and it’s been generous this month – at least five golfers have had a hole-in-one on different holes.
