The Prince Albert Predators are off on the right foot in the Prairie Gold Lacrosse League (PGLL) finals.

The Predators moved one step closer to capping off back-to-back-to-back championships on Saturday by taking Game 1 of the best-of-three series 13-7 against the Mustangs in Moose Jaw.

P.A. held a narrow lead after the opening period, but Moose Jaw struck first with Kysen Mac Angus scoring just over a minute into the game.

The Preds then scored three in a row to go out in front, with Matthew Cudmore, Ryley Prediger, and Braden Shewchuk each finding the back of the net. Ryder Gilroy added another for Moose Jaw in the final moments of the period to make it 3-2 after one.

The Mustangs did go onto tie it up at the start of the second when Carter Hudyma scored his first of the playoffs. Cudmore had an answer less than 20 seconds later while Talon Sandry followed up a minute after as P.A. quickly restored the lead, and then some.

However, Moose Jaw refused to go down easy and managed to pull themselves back to even once again. Gilroy got his second of the night and Nate Lewko converted on the power play as the game was now tied at five.

The Predators didn’t let off the gas either, with Talon Sandry putting P.A. back out in front while Cudmore’s third of the night came on the man advantage with just eight seconds left on the clock. The Predators carried a 7-5 lead into the final 20 minutes of play.

There is where it all fell apart for Moose Jaw.

P.A. came out of the gates firing on all cylinders to start the third, scoring four goals in less than three minutes, courtesy of Sandry’s second and third goals, along with Logan Rieger and Brayden Rieger’s first of the game.

The Mustangs showed some signs of life when Chase McKee scored midway through the third to begin the comeback, but Brayden Rieger’s second of the frame shut things down. McKee, again, found the back of the net to try and kickstart things for Moose Jaw with six minutes to go, but Shewchuk hammered the final nail in the coffin with 3:37 left in the game to seal a nice Game 1 victory for Prince Albert, 13-7.

The Predators now have a chance to close out the series with a win on Saturday, which would be their third straight PGLL and Provincial Championship. Game 2 of the best-of-three series happens July 26 at Kinsmen Arena in Prince Albert. Opening faceoff is slated for 7 p.m. A series deciding Game 3 is scheduled to be played in the form of a mini game immediately following Game 2, if Moose Jaw wins.

Regardless if Prince Albert is crowned champions or not, the team’s season will not end as they’re set to compete at the MacDonald Cup, the Western Canadian Junior B Lacrosse Invitational Championships, next month in Abbotsford, B.C. The Predators return to the tournament as the defending champions, and begin their title defence on Aug. 6, with a champion being crowned Aug. 10.
